While walking around Hue, I met a French-looking Vietnamese old man who owns a small candy shop: he was wearing a béret! Oh yeah!

Contrary to the South, I could definitely feel the remains of French influence in Hué: it’s much easier to find French books; a waiter quickly identified me as French and practised the language with me; the imperial city is full of French tourists AND French-speaking tour guides whose French is very good; AND one of the bridges over the Perfume river was built by French engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel- the guy who built the Eiffel tower. Okay, this one doesn’t really count, I just had to mention it!

Tet (Vietnamese new year) sweets.

The imperial city of Hue, also known as citadel, is a must-see... unless you can visit the one in Beijing.

(Version française plus bas)

The imperial city of Hue, also known as citadel, is a must-see… unless you can visit the one in Beijing that’s in a much better shape.

For me, it’s the first time I have ever set foot in an imperial city of any kind. The place was badly destroyed during the Vietnam war, hence the many ruins. But Thai Hoa palace and a few houses are beautifully holding up.

The entrance of the citadel.

The imperial city has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993, and they are making efforts to restore the citadel as it once was. With a little imagination drawn from books or movies -I chose the latter(!) you can almost bring it back to life. The constant drizzle may also help setting the mood!

Lotus flowers on a pond.

* * * * * * *

In Hoi An I paid a visit to Tiên Hâu, the Goddess of the Sea who lives in Phuc Kiên Temple. She is guarded by two genies constantly peering at the horizon to inform her about impending dangers. Phuc Kiên was built by Chinese migrants from Fujian province in 1757. I thought it was one of the most interesting sites in Hoi An.

During my Têt holidays, I decided to visit the center region of Vietnam. I had an amazing time.

I left Saigon on a sleeping bus.During the 22 hour long journey to Hoi An I met Yuliya, from Belarus and Sam, from Australia. We got along very well and decided to visit Hoi An together.

The streets of Hoi An.

Têt lamps.

We wandered around, visited old houses and buildings, bought dragon fruits and apples, looked out for conical hats, and ate Hoi An specialities: cao lau and wite rose.

Hoi An is a very cute town with beautiful old timber houses. Until the 19th century, Hoi An was a thriving port town thanks to trade with China and Japan. Those relationships largely influenced the architecture, a mix of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese styles.

Nguyen thai hoc street.

Yuliya, and Sam.

On the practical side, I wasn’t too happy with the ticket system for visitors. You must buy a 75,000 Dong pass that gives you access to one old house, one museum, one temple or bridge, one congregation hall and one music or handicraft show.

Hoi An is a World Heritage site and deserves to be. I understand that they need to make enough money to maintain all the monuments, especially those in which less people are interested, but it is frustrating that you cannot pick excatly what you want to see. Yuliya, Sam and I wanted to visit three old houses, but to do so each of us would have had to buy three passes. We tried to use our museum ticket to visit a house, we even said we would pay to visit the place, but the staff would hear nothing. ”We can only accept ticket #2- the house ticket- because at the end of the month we count them and get money from the government accordingly,” we were told at the entrance.

Still, if you don’t mind the tourists, Hoi An is definitely worth a little visit.
