I confirm the news: we are now officially settled in Quito!

We have found a very nice apartment not too far from the tourist district called ”La Mariscal.” It has three bedrooms, a living-room/dining room, a kitchen and a rooftop. It’s clean, modern and safe- a guard in the hallway controls who comes in and out of the building. It’s also close to public transportation and to a university.

Freddie fixing the curtains! Welcome home!

There’s a market nearby, an ATM, and a store that sells authentic products from la sierra such as quinoa and panela (solidified cane sugar juice), and whose benefits go directly to farmers. (I’m so excited about this store! Now we have an apartment I’m gonna cook, and cook and cook Ecuadorian and French and the likes!) Plus there is an awesome, colorful Ecuadorian bar with great music and a huge TV screen where we MUST go watch soccer games.

And the rent is only $330/month, no deposit required.

In short it is the ideal place… although I think I would prefer something a little less comfortable and a little more adventurous. But to our defence, we have tried hard and found nothing else.

Our cosy ''grandma´s living room''!

We followed the advice of a fellow Ecuadorian I met during my month of volunteering and bought the Saturday and Sunday newspaper ”El Commercio,” to look at the classified section for apartment rentals. We focused on a student neighboorhood called ”La Floresta,” and on Old Town Quito: ”El Centro Histórico,” and called about twenty-five people.

Five of them said their place was already taken, about seven didn’t answer and for the rest of them it was either too expensive, unfurnished or had only two bedrooms. We also visited two, almost three other apartments in El Centro Histórico, but it didn’t work out.

As Freddie and I agree that the sooner out of the hostel the better, we’ve decided to move in the ideal apartment right away. Yeeehaaa!

Feelin´at home reading the paper!

Another good thing that came out of this field research is that I’ve almost become quite a pro at asking the right questions in the right order, to save time, money and breath whenever possible. If you ever look for an apartment in Quito, here’s what you should say to spend less than four minutes on the phone with each ad you call up:

(This is the key question because it seems most apartments around here aren’t furnished, especially in El Centro Histórico. So ask this now, don’t keep it for the end of the conversation!)
-¿Tiene tres dormitorios?
-Somos cinco personas. ¿Cuantas camas hay? Necesitamos cinco camas.
-¿Cuanto es por mes?
-¿Quiere un depósito?”

But don’t forget to check Craigslist: Quito. That’s how we’ve found our ideal place!

* ”Good morning!”
”I’m calling about the apartment. I saw the ad in today’s newspaper.
”Is it furnished?”
”Are there three bedrooms?”
”There are five of us. How many beds are there? We need five beds.”
”How much is it per month?”
”Do you ask for a deposit?”

* * * * * * *
INSTALLES!

(This is the key question because it seems most apartments around here aren’t furnished, especially in El Centro Histórico. So ask this now, don’t keep it for the end of the conversation!)
-¿Tiene tres dormitorios?
-Somos cinco personas. ¿Cuantas camas hay? Necesitamos cinco camas.

* ”Bonjour!
