“Saigon is not Vietnam.”

As a new fan you’re sure to notice an abundance of awesomely international content on the site, from places like Saigon, Ecuador and Italy. So because it’s Friday night, and because it’s my first night sans work, and because maybe I’m a little detail-oriented, I feel inspired to stay home put together a little JS0 cheat sheet for current happenings.  Or you could just skip my Cliffs Notes and go straight to Wikipedia.

Saigon Cast (Season 5): They WERE in Saigon, Vietnam for 90 days. Their episodes are airing NOW.  One each Friday. Laurene is the only Season 5 gal who continued on to Season 6.   Very cool, Laurene.

Quito Cast (Season 6): They ARE in Quito, Ecuador, still getting settled and landing jobs. They include Laurene, Freddie, Jenna and Ryan. (thumbnail photos on right). They are not broadcasting full-length episodes yet, but they blog daily and create delicious video shorts of all-things Ecuador.

Italy Cast (Season 7): We ARE GOING TO Italy. We leave next week. We include me (Courtney), sisters Perrin and Sarah, and Lynne, from Scotland (thumbnail photos on right). We are not broadcasting full-length episodes yet either, but we’re getting our daily blog, photo and Flip on too.

Episode 2

Jen heads off to Cambodia on a last minute adventure while the rest of the girls stay behind and start the difficult process of looking for jobs.

I love Vietnam. It’s the first and only Asian country I have ever visited, thus it has a special place in my heart. But it has been almost five months already, so it’s time for Jet Set Zero to hit the road again.

VIETNAM, LE BEST OF

J’aime beaucoup le Viêtnam. C’est le premier pays asiatique que j’ai visité, et le seul. Mais voilà presque cinq mois que je suis ici, alors il est temps pour Jet Set Zero de mettre à nouveau les voiles.

Rendez-vous au mois d’avril en EQUATEURRRRRRR! Cela m’emballe à un point, vous n’avez pas idée! A très bientôt!

It’s never easy to say goodbye. I personally never know how I am going to react until the moment has come. But it might be that the more you think about leaving, the more difficult it gets. My recipe to avoid this? Live your life as normal until the last minute.

The day before my departure I worked at the daycare center in the morning and taught two French classes in the afternoon. I hardly had half an hour to relax before meeting up friends at a bar for one last drink, which turned into a club night.

Almost all my friends showed up: co-workers, friends, other friends, friends of friends. And they all got along so well, which makes me very happy. Thanks to my leaving they are forming new friendships. Can you find a better reason to leave?!

Saying goodbye to JSZ;

In the morning, it was a different story, though a happy one. Around 9.30am I sat all the children around the table and told them I would be leaving Vietnam the next day.

I had been a little worried that some of the children would be sad because they become attached to us so easily. Thus, I made sure to tell them repeatedly during my last week that I would leave soon, so that they could get used to the idea.

Why are you leaving, Laurene?

”Why are you leaving, Laurene?”
”Because I am moving to Ecuador.”
”Yes, but why?”
”……. Because I have to see my mum and my dad.”

(Almost) every child has a mum and a dad, so I figured such a reason would make sense to them all. Besides, it’s only half a lie: I’ll see my parents, eventually!

We celebrated my departure with fresh pineapple juice and brioche. The oldest kids sang ”Baloum, Baloum,” a new song Méléhane, Mai and I have been trying to teach them.

I kissed many tiny cheeks while being kissed. It was great! Later on when the children were asleep, my co-workers and I had some brioche and hard cider and champomy! I was quite proud of myself for having brought hard cider because they had never had any.

They gave me a lot of presents. One would have thought Santa Claus had come back for me! The children had made beautiful drawings which made me laugh and almost shed a tear. I got a beautiful scarf with my coworkers’ names embroidered on it, ”to keep them effectively close to my heart” as Mrs Thy said. And an awesome photo album with pictures of all the birthdays we celebrated during my stay at the daycare center. Honeslty girls, well done! I did not expect all this and you had the best ideas ever!

Because of all this, I didn’t have time to pack until the next morning, but who cares! Thanks to each and everyone of you for having made my discovery of Vietnam so wonderful! I haven’t only seen Vietnam, I’ve experienced it! What else is there to say?… CAM ON NHIEU**!

TAM BIET (Tạm biệt) *

Faire ses adieux n’est pas toujours facile. Personnellement, je ne sais jamais quelle sera ma réaction jusqu’au moment où il faut partir. Mais je crois que, plus on pense au fait de partir, plus les adieux sont difficiles.

Ma recette pour parer à cela? Vivre sa vie comme à l’habitude jusqu’à la dernière minute.
Le jour précédant mon départ j’ai travaillé à la crèche le matin et j’ai donné deux cours de Français l’après-midi. J’ai à peine eu une demi-heure pour souffler avant de retrouver tous mes potes et amis pour un dernier verre, et même une dernière nuit en boîte.

Presque tout le monde était là: mes collègues, mes amis, d’autres amis, des amis d’amis. Et ils se sont tous super bien entendu, ce qui me ravit. Grâce à mon départ de nouvelles amitiés se forment. Pouvez trouver une meilleur raison de partir?!

Le matin, ce fut une autre histoire bien que tout aussi heureuse. Vers 9h30 nous avons rassemblé les enfants autour de la table pour leur expliquer que je quittai le Viêtnam le lendemain.

J’avais été un peu inquiète que certains enfants ne le prennent pas très bien, ils s’attachent si facilement à nous! Alors, je leur ai rappelé plusieurs fois dans la semaine que j’allais bientôt partir, pour qu’il se fassent à l’idée.

« Pourquoi tu pars, Laurene?
- Parce que je déménage, je vais vivre en Equateur.
- Oui mais pourquoi?
- …. Parce qu’il faut que j’aille voir mon papa et ma maman. »

(Presque ) tous les enfants ont un papa et une maman, alors je me suis dit qu’ils comprendraient mieux ainsi. En plus, ce n’est qu’un demi-mensonge: je finirai bien par revoir mes parents, après l’Equateur!

Nous avons donc fêté ça avec du jus d’ananas fraîchement pressé et de la brioche. Les grands ont chanté ”Baloum, Baloum”, une nouvelle chanson que Méléhane, Mai et moi avons essayé de leur apprendre.

J’ai échangé beaucoup de bisous contre des baisers mouillés. C’était super!! Puis, pendant que les enfants faisaient la sieste, nous avons à notre tour mangé de la brioche et trinqué avec du cidre ou du champomy- au choix! J’étais assez fière de moi sur ce coup-là car mes collègues vietnamiennes ne connaissaient pas le cidre!

Ensuite, j’ai été assaillie de cadeaux- on aurait pu croire que le Père Noël était passé une seconde fois! Les enfants avaient fait de magnifiques dessins à mon intention, qui m’ont bien ému et bien fait rire aussi. Et puis j’ai reçu une belle écharpe brodée avec tous les prénoms du staff dessus, pour les garder réellement loin des yeux mais près du coeur. Et un super album photo de mes quatre mois passés à la crèche. Franchement les filles, bravo! Je ne m’y attendais pas du tout, et vous avez eu des idées canon.

Avec tout ça, je n’ai eu le temps de faire mon sac que le lendemain matin. Mais qu’importe. Merci à tous, grâce à vous je n’ai pas seulement découvert le Vietnam, je l’ai vécu! Que dire d’autre…? CAM ON NHIEU*!

What will I miss about Vietnam (besides friends)?

1) Fruits. And fresh fruit shakes.
Ooooohh fruits, I love you so very much. I think I have tried nearly everyone of you. I apologize for not knowing all your names, but trust me, I do remember your faces. You were very refreshing, very filling, or both! I’ll miss you so very much.

2) My kids.
The little ones I worked with at school. I loved them all, even the hyperactive ones.
I’m glad they are so young that they won’t cry too much over my departure. Honestly, who remembers much of when you were two or three years old? Not me.

Dear children, I wish you all the best. Perhaps we’ll run into each other one day, when you are grown-ups. Perhaps you will recognize me and say: ”Hey, I remember you! You are the teacher who would make funny sounds to make us eat!”

3) The cheap lifestyle.
In Vietnam you can live simply and cheap, or in style and relatively cheap.

No, I won't miss Vietnamese ketchup. It's absolutely gross.

4) Vietnamese friendliness.

5) Bargaining for everything I buy.
Okay, it’s a joke. I’ve become quite good at it -I even bargain for others- but it’s still not my cup of tea.

HOMMAGE AU VIETNAM

Ce qui va me manquer une fois partie du Viêtnam (à part les amis)?

1) Les fruits. Et les fruit shakes frais.
Oôôôôôôô fruits que j’adore. Je pense avoir goûté à chacun d’entre vous. Pardonnez-moi d’avoir oublié vos prénoms, mais rassurez-vous, je me souviens de tous vos visages! Vous étiez rafraîchissants ou nourrissants, ou les deux en même temps! Vous allez sacrément me manquer.

2) Mes enfants.
Les bambins dont je m’occupais à la crèche. Je les aime tous, même les hyperactifs. Je suis bien contente qu’ils soient si jeunes, comme ça il ne seront pas trop traumatisés par mon départ. Franchement, qui parmi nous a beaucoup de souvenirs de quand nous avions deux ou trois ans? Pas moi.

Mes chers bambins, je vous souhaite ”tout le bonheur du monde, pour aujourd’hui comme pour demain”. Peut-être qu’un jour quand vous serez grands, on se croisera dans la rue. Vous me reconnaîtrez et direz: « Tiens, je me souviens de toi! Tu es la maîtresse qui faisait des drôles de bruitages pour nous faire manger! »

3) La vie pas chère.
Au Vietnam on peut vivre simplement pour trois fois rien, ou avec du style pour pas grand chose.

4) La gentillesse vietnamienne

5) Négocier les prix à tour de bras.
Non, je plaisante. Bien que j’ai fait de gros progrès- je me débrouille comme un chef désormais, je négocie même pour les autres!!- ce n’est toujours pas ma tasse de thé.

Où que je j’aille dans cette ville, on dirait qu’il y a toujours du nouveau. Quelque chose que je n’avais jamais remarqué auparavant.

In the scorching saigonese heat, what’s better to do than going to the waterpark?!
Awesome slides, a zip-line, an outdoors wave pool…! Some of the aquatic attractions are forbidden in Australia- and possibly in Europe (?)- for safety reasons. Fortunately, there was no incident. I felt like a kid. It was awesome!

PLOUFFFF!

Dans la chaleur écrasante saïgonaise, quoi de mieux que d’aller au parc aquatique?! De géniaux toboggans qui tournicotent, une tyrolienne, une piscine à vagues en extérieur..! Certaines de ces attractions sont interdites en Australie- et peut-être en France aussi(?)- pour des raisons de sécurité.
Heureusement qu’il n’y pas eu d’accident! J’étais excitée comme un gosse. C’était génial!

Except for sleeping, many Vietnamese do everything on the street.
They squat eating on the sidewalk. They nap on their motorbikes. And, at almost every street corner, there’s someone to fix flat tires and fill up empty tanks with gasoline.

VIVRE A LA VIETNAMIENNE

Sauf pour dormir, beaucoup de Vietnamiens vivent dans la rue.
Ils mangent accroupis sur les trottoirs. Ils font la sieste sur leur moto. Et à presque chaque coin de rue, il y en a un pour parer aux crevaisons et remplir d’essence les réservoirs vides.

SUR LA ROUTE DE HUE

Le Vietnam compte deux ponts couverts à son patrimoine architectural. L’un se trouve à Hoi An, c’est le pont-pagode japonais construit en 1593 et restauré en 1917. L’autre est dans les environs de Hué, c’est le pont Thanh Toan construit en 1776.
