A WEEKEND IN THE MEKONG DELTA(3/3): THE FLOATING MARKET
4.00AM: The sky is still completely dark. On my way to the docks, I walk past two Vietnamese joggers. The streets of Cai Bé are quite busy already. Some mom and pop shops are already open.
4.45AM: I set foot on Phom’s small motor boat.
Phom is my new friend. I met her last night as I was trying to secure a boat ride to the floating market for toda. She got so excited when I asked her to take me on her boat! When I saw her this morning she was all smiles, telling it all to the men of her neighborhood!

The night is shorter than expected…
It’s four o’clock in the morning when:
”Cock a doodle dooooooo!”
”Cock a doodle dooooooo!”
”Cock a doodle dooooooo!”
”Cock a doodle dooooooo!”
It doesn’t stop for two hours. At 6.30 AM, I go outside the house to explore the garden.
At least thirty roosters are running around or waiting to be freed from their cages!

It had been a while that I wanted to get out of the city for more than a day. I decided to go to the Mekong delta, once again. This time however, I would go on my own. No organized tour where everyting is timed to the minute. No time pressure. I would decide what I’d like to see and do, I would take all the time I want to wander around and take photographs.
Needless to say, this was my best weekend in Viêtnam.

Our new friend Nguyet, who as mentioned before, works in the travel agency downstairs at our guest house, was invited on a tour of the Mekong Delta as a way to check it out so she could recomend it to her customers. We decided to tag along, well because it was a full day tour for $8 and you can’t really beat that. Little did we know how freakin’ rad this tour would end up being.
We were chartered a couple hours out of Saigon by bus, and immediately shuffled onto a boat right on the delta. The boat took us across to the other side of the delta, where a jungly paradise lived.
