(Version française plus bas)

How come Vietnamese children get sick from Agent Orange, a herbicide that was sprayed over Vietnam more than thirty years ago?

That’s the question some of you have asked me to answer…

Agent Orange

Agent Orange is a powerful defoliant used by the American army during the Vietnam war in order to destroy the forest where the Vietnamese guerilla was hiding. Agent Orange- as well as other herbicides- contained dioxine, a substance which, in great quantities, is extremely harmful to people, animals and their environment. Hundreds of kilograms of dioxin were dropped on Vietnam through herbicides.

Nowadays, the youth suffers from this pollutant for different reasons.
Some areas of Vietnam are still full of dioxine, which means that some inhabitants are still directly exposed to it. The only effective way to quickly get rid of the substance is to heat it up to at least 1,000 degrees, which in practice is quite difficult to perform.

People get poisoned by dioxin through food. By eating contaminated fish and meat, and by drinking contaminated milk, dioxine piles up in their bodies. The children of Ky Quang orphanage most likely got poisoned while in their mothers’ wombs, through the placenta or breast-feeding. As a result of this, they suffer from physical malformations and sometimes mental disorders.

L’AGENT ORANGE?
