(Version française plus bas)

Many Vietnamese women are fascinated with my ”yellow hair” and ”white skin,” as they say.

Like this old woman at the bus stop, who kept staring at me. She mumbled something in Vietnamese. I shrugged, to tell her that I didn’t understand what she was saying. Then, the woman sitting next to me said. ”She say you are beautiful.”

Jet black hair.

It happened again at Nguyet’s village, where I spent my Tet holidays. Her neighbors were jealous- in a nice way- of my white skin. By the way, they were also jealous of my tummy, which is not completely flat as theirs!

Most Vietnamese women who live in the city use a lotion to whiten their skin. Despite my efforts to make them change their minds: ”You are beautiful. You should like yourself the way you are! There’s nothing wrong with having a tanned skin. It’s nature. It’s how you are meant to be!!!”, they keep wearing long sleeves, long pants and long gloves when exposed to the sunlight.

In some situations I find the staring acceptable, but sometimes it really bothers me. In France, if you catch a person staring at you she quickly looks away. Not here. Their staring can be so intense that it feels really intruding. Once, on the bus after an exhausting day at work, I found myself telling a woman to stop staring at me while I was counting my change.

I couldn’t hep it, and I felt bad about it.

Jet black hair, again.

The other day as I was sitting at the back of a bus full of locals, I found myself admiring the jet black hair of two girls who were sitting in the sunlight. And I thought: now, you can imagine what it’s like for them when they see real blond hair.

Okay, I’ll try to take the staring easy.

* * * * * * *
