I love Vietnam. It’s the first and only Asian country I have ever visited, thus it has a special place in my heart. But it has been almost five months already, so it’s time for Jet Set Zero to hit the road again.

We’ll see you in April in ECUADORRRRRRRRR! I am so excited, you have no idea! See you there!

VIETNAM, LE BEST OF

It’s never easy to say goodbye. I personally never know how I am going to react until the moment has come. But it might be that the more you think about leaving, the more difficult it gets. My recipe to avoid this? Live your life as normal until the last minute.

Van, Nhan and I promoting JSZ at the pub.

The day before my departure I worked at the daycare center in the morning and taught two French classes in the afternoon. I hardly had half an hour to relax before meeting up friends at a bar for one last drink, which turned into a club night.

Almost all my friends showed up: co-workers, friends, other friends, friends of friends. And they all got along so well, which makes me very happy. Thanks to my leaving they are forming new friendships. Can you find a better reason to leave?!

Co-workers, friends, friends of friends...

Saying goodbye to JSZ;

In the morning, it was a different story, though a happy one. Around 9.30am I sat all the children around the table and told them I would be leaving Vietnam the next day.

I had been a little worried that some of the children would be sad because they become attached to us so easily. Thus, I made sure to tell them repeatedly during my last week that I would leave soon, so that they could get used to the idea.

Why are you leaving, Laurene?

”Why are you leaving, Laurene?”
”Because I am moving to Ecuador.”
”Yes, but why?”
”……. Because I have to see my mum and my dad.”

(Almost) every child has a mum and a dad, so I figured such a reason would make sense to them all. Besides, it’s only half a lie: I’ll see my parents, eventually!

We celebrated my departure with fresh pineapple juice and brioche. The oldest kids sang ”Baloum, Baloum,” a new song Méléhane, Mai and I have been trying to teach them.

Bon voyage!

I kissed many tiny cheeks while being kissed. It was great! Later on when the children were asleep, my co-workers and I had some brioche and hard cider and champomy! I was quite proud of myself for having brought hard cider because they had never had any.

They gave me a lot of presents. One would have thought Santa Claus had come back for me! The children had made beautiful drawings which made me laugh and almost shed a tear. I got a beautiful scarf with my coworkers’ names embroidered on it, ”to keep them effectively close to my heart” as Mrs Thy said. And an awesome photo album with pictures of all the birthdays we celebrated during my stay at the daycare center. Honeslty girls, well done! I did not expect all this and you had the best ideas ever!

Au revoir mes enfants!

Because of all this, I didn’t have time to pack until the next morning, but who cares! Thanks to each and everyone of you for having made my discovery of Vietnam so wonderful! I haven’t only seen Vietnam, I’ve experienced it! What else is there to say?… CAM ON NHIEU**!

Ciao!

*Goodbye
** Thank you very much

* * * * * * *

CAM ON NHIEU*!

* Au revoir
** Merci beaucoup

What will I miss about Vietnam?

(Version française plus bas)

What will I miss about Vietnam (besides friends)?

1) Fruits. And fresh fruit shakes.
Ooooohh fruits, I love you so very much. I think I have tried nearly everyone of you. I apologize for not knowing all your names, but trust me, I do remember your faces. You were very refreshing, very filling, or both! I’ll miss you so very much.

2) My kids.
The little ones I worked with at school. I loved them all, even the hyperactive ones.
I’m glad they are so young that they won’t cry too much over my departure. Honestly, who remembers much of when you were two or three years old? Not me.

Dear children, I wish you all the best. Perhaps we’ll run into each other one day, when you are grown-ups. Perhaps you will recognize me and say: ”Hey, I remember you! You are the teacher who would make funny sounds to make us eat!”

3) The cheap lifestyle.
In Vietnam you can live simply and cheap, or in style and relatively cheap.

No, I won't miss Vietnamese ketchup. It's absolutely gross.

4) Vietnamese friendliness.

5) Bargaining for everything I buy.
Okay, it’s a joke. I’ve become quite good at it -I even bargain for others- but it’s still not my cup of tea.

A plane over Ho Chi Minh City.

* * * * * * *

Vous allez sacrément me manquer.

2) Mes enfants.

In the scorching saigonese heat, what’s better to do than going to the waterpark?!
Awesome slides, a zip-line, an outdoors wave pool…! Some of the aquatic attractions are forbidden in Australia- and possibly in Europe (?)- for safety reasons. Fortunately, there was no incident. I felt like a kid. It was awesome!

Sam, Hai and I at the water park.

* * * * * * *

PLOUFFFF!

Except for sleeping, many Vietnamese do everything on the street.
They squat eating on the sidewalk. They nap on their motorbikes. And, at almost every street corner, there’s someone to fix flat tires and fill up empty tanks with gasoline.

Sitting on the street.

* * * * * * *

I am very grateful to Nguyet for inviting me to her village, Tien Cam.
Life is simple and authentic there. They sleep on hard wood beds with a straw mat on them. There is no real shower-yet (Nguyet said)! They use a bucket of cold water and a plastic pan behind a sheet. But trust me, at the end of the day you don’t want a hot shower anyway!

Nguyet, her siblings and I took walks in the rice fields. We hit the local café. We ate freshly picked bananas, longanes et milk apples. I told them how to pronounce my name, they taught me how to say ”butterfly” (bum-bum) and ”firefly” (dom-dom).

Nguyet is the only one in her family who speaks English but I was able to communicate with the rest of them. One of her cousins who learns English at school asked me to read out loud a few pages of my book. He was so excited!

I think my stay in Tien Cam is my best memory of Vietnam. Thanks Nguyet!

* * * * * * *

Merci Nguyet!

Our friend Nguyet invited me to her village to celebrate Vietnamese New Year: ''Tet'. During Tet, all the Vietnamese go home to stay with their family for three days.

(Version française plus bas)

Our friend Nguyet invited me to her village to celebrate Vietnamese New Year: ”Tet”. During Tet, all the Vietnamese go home to stay with their family for three days. In short, Tet is a family holidays when you don’t do much besides visiting relatives and neighbors, eating Tet sweets and candies, drinking rice wine (or is it vodka?!) and giving lucky money to the youth.

Tien Cam is located in a mountainous region near Hoi An, in the forest. I like to say it’s in the jungle! The week before Tet, Nguyet’s grandmother died. Tet was a special occasion for the family to gather again, pray for her and visit the tomb according to Buddhist principles. They also held a short ceremony at the family house.

After the ceremony was lunch. All the men sat at a table and asked me to sing. I sang the first thing that came to my mind ”Vive les chapeaux ronds, vive la Bretagne,” which is not very appropiate as it tells the story of a boy who shows up, alone, at his grandfather’s funeral. But that’s all I could think of! I was glad they couldn’t understand French, although if they had, they would have probably laughed about it for the Vietnamese have a great sense of humor.

* * * * * * *

Hué being only 100 km away from a main Vietnam war combat zone, I decided to check it out. Initially, I wanted to treat myself to a day trip on a moto taxi taking me to various landmarks. (Being on the passenger seat of a motorbike is truly awesome.) But my driver let me down at the last minute ”because it’s raining and it’s too far.” I think he wanted to stay in town with his friends to get drunk for Tet. So I hopped on a bus with twenty other tourists instead.

The Rockpile on top of which a US army base used to be during the Vietnam war.

The ride was fine but long. We drove about 360 km in just one day. We first stopped by Thon Khe Tri US base, also known as ”The Rockpile.” The base used to be at the top of the mountain and could only be reached by helicopter. It is still surrounded by the jungle which, at the time, was crowded with tigers and hostile minority population.

We saw the Ho Chi Minh trail, a well concealed network of dirt roads, bike paths and river paths used by the Communists to supply their southern forces.

On the left, a river path of the Ho Chi Minh trail network, replaced by a bridge, on the right.

We then went to Khe Sanh, a strategic US army base located on the 17th parallel which marked the border between North and South Vietnam. The US thought Khe Sanh was impregnable and were taken aback when Vietnamese patriots surrounded it and took it over after weeks of assault. It was 1968.

Khe Shanh US army base.

A CH-47 helicopter for transporting ambulance and air conveying.

We also visited the tunnels of Vinh Moc where about 360 villagers took shelter during the war. The tunnels of 12 to 20 meters deep and 2 kilometers long are quite extraordinary. They were dug by the locals themselves- as opposed to the Vietcong- who built a maternity room, a health station, toilets, a meeting room, a kitchen, and bomb shelters that could fit three or four people. The kitchen was connected to a network of tiny tunnels so that smoke could get out gradually without being noticed by the enemy.

Trenches at Vinh Moc tunnels.

Vinh Moc tunnels network.

One of several entrances of a Vinh Moc tunnel.

Inside the tunnel.

Our last stop was at a cemetary for Vietnamese soldiers and, I believe, civilians. Hundreds and hundreds of light grey tombstones. The sight of it reminded me of the American and German cemetaries in Normandy. Only, American soldiers have white crosses whereas the Germans have dark grey ones.

A cemetary for Vietnamese soldiers and possibly civilians.

Wherever we are in the world, there is always something to remind us of the tragedies we have faced.

* * * * * * *

DMZ: ZONE DEMILITARISEE
