The festivities are all alight, aglow, and blasting off into the sky as we speak, but your Loy Krathong vlog will be coming soon. So far it has be A-fucking-MAZING! Phenomenal! Breathtaking. As for me, I laughed, I cried… I lost my voice.

Food for thought: With 12 full moons in a lunar year, why doesn’t the U.S. of A have a festival – or even an acknowledgement – of this immense treasure in our sky?

Countdown to Loi Krathong

The one thing I’ve been looking forward to the most since I’ve been in Thailand is Loi Krathong! Loi Krathong is a festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand, it is held on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. In the western calendar this usually falls in November. In Thai “Loi” means to float and “Krathong” is a circular floating object decorated with banana leaves, flowers, a candle, and incense. The Krathong is sent down a river, (The Ping River in Chiang Mai’s case) which symbolizes apologies to the river for all human kind has done to it. And also on Loi Krathong lanterns are set adrift in the sky, thousands of them. The night sky is dotted with these beautiful lanterns sent up to rid ones self from misfortune. I’ve been looking forward to this festival for some time now and it is finally approaching . This is just what I needed, an opportunity to cleanse my spirit and start over new.

SEOUL WORLD DJ FESTIVAL: I

The Seoul World DJ Festival was a lot of fun. Not exactly what we expected, but a lot of fun. We had a pretty outrageous time and made a lot of new friends. Many more pictures as we slowly offload cameras. Media follows.

We hung out on the grass while people showed up to the festival. It was a great day for being outside. As night fell the party got started…

During the day the crowds were not nearly as dense, but they still loved to dance.

The party gets going and we manage to stumble into some lounge area. They were drinking champagne. I say they because we were unable to talk our way into any.

We went to Hongdae, then came back. Then we stumbled around.

We end up in a tent for awhile. Met a bunch of new people and drank some beers. They were overpriced, but not by much.

Finally we went home. And by home I mean Hongdae.

Lantern Festival

This past weekend was the annual lantern festival in Seoul. I am not 100% sure, but I think it is held each year to honor the god of lanterns and ensure a full and robust lantern crop. The legend is that one year the festival was not held and the entirety of Korea remained dark for a century as a punishment from an angered and vengeful lantern god.

The culmination of the festival is a parade in which over 100 million lanterns stream past the crowded streets, held aloft by the cities children, monks, and wizards. Also there are two giant neon fire breathing dreams. They represent the eternal struggle of night and day for dominion over the earth.*

*Disclaimer: I was only at the festival for 45 minutes and have no idea why it was held or what really happened before or after I left. I apologize.

Episode 203: Things To Do in Tokyo When You're Broke

Finding fun in Tokyo without any cash is a constantly evolving creative challenge.

Finally, an episode out on time! Ever since I made it back to the States I’ve had trouble keeping things on schedule. Before I went to Japan I was always at a two week lag from real time, and when I was with the crew on the road I was experiencing things as they happened, but at all times I had to be thinking a few weeks ahead to do my job as producer. About 60% of my time is spent as editor thinking about what did happen, and about 40% of my time is spent as executive producer/director thinking about what will happen, and the result is that I spend a clean 100% of my time confused. I was too inexperienced when starting this project to know why production and planning staff are almost always separate, but I think I’ve got the gist of it after living for a few months in this scheduled haze.

This week also marks the debut of our newest musical contributor: Tettix! I’ve been listening to Judson Cowan’s music for years, both in his current incarnation and under his previous handle of Cicada. His work has been featured in a number of creative spots, including this Boing Boing short. It gives me no shortage of pleasure to be editing to his music, in this episode The Graves of Good Humans from the startling Technology Crisis II. I hope to use a few more of Tettix’s tracks before Season 2 is up, but in the meantime check out all his albums at www.tettix.net or purchase his songs on iTunes!
