Mom: So are you all set to go to Ecuador?

Me:   Uhh..well actually I thought I’d fly to Colombia instead.

Silence…

Mom: Did you say Colombia?

Every mother’s dream: to hear that her only daughter is flying to Colombia – alone.

Colombia has been on my Top 5 list of countries to visit for years now. That’s years – plural – that I’ve wanted to go there…and haven’t. So why not now?

Once I found out that one-way flights from LA to Colombia were only $265 on Spirit airlines, it was pretty much a done deal. I’m flying into Cartagena, a beautiful colonial city on the Caribbean sea, and I’ll make my way overland to Ecuador over the next few days to meet up with everyone in Quito.

With Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, I am pondering whether it would be cruel or kind to call my mom from Colombia – collect, of course – because I might need to save my pesos for other things..like ransom.

Just kidding Mom.
