As per usual, I was having an ice cream craving so I hit up the Shop N Go for a tasty treat. While rummaging around in the freezer I came across a package with a fish on it. Fish flavoured popsicle? Gross! I had to try it… I opened it up with great anticipation and realized it was an ice cream sandwich in the shape of a fish. Getting ready to taste some fish flavoured ice cream I bit into it…. damnit! It was only vanilla ice cream with some sort of strange strawberry(?) jam like filling mixed in. I was bummed that it wasn’t some bizzaro Vietnamese fish ice cream but extremely relieved at the same time. Anyways, the point of this post is that I’m in love with these fish ice cream sandwiches, they are my new favourite thing here in Vietnam and I’m going to eat 7 everyday until I leave and if you’re in Vietnam and you feel like buying me a gift, I would highly suggest you purchase me a case of these.

After spending a few days in Siem Reap we headed to Phnom Penh, Cambodia where we visited the Choeung Ek Killing Fields and the Tuol Sleng Museum. The Tuol Sleng Museum was formerly a prison during the Pol Pot regime where prisoners were kept and tortured and eventually taken to the Choeung Ek killing fields where they were executed. Rarely was it a quick and painless bullet to the head as bullets were precious. Prisoners were often beat to death. When we entered the killing fields we saw a giant Buddhist stupa filled with over 5000 human skulls and a ridiculous number of mass graves.
This is without a doubt one of the saddest places I have ever been….

I know most of you are probably curious as to what I’ve been doing for work and why I’m not sleeping in a gutter. Before arriving in Vietnam, I did a lot of research into ESL teaching and basically every forum said if you’re Asian you will not get hired to teach English even though you’re a native English speaker. But then I got here and realized that it is possible!…. if you have some sort of qualification which I don’t. Luckily, I’ve still been working with a travel agency Turkey editing and rewriting their website so there’s some income coming in. The second thing I started to do is sell Vietnamese knick knacks and what not online. This is not steady by any means but between my two “jobs” I’m making it work.
However, I did apply for one job since I’ve been here. I applied at a bar to be a bartender. The girl laughed and said they couldn’t pay me enough, but when I told her I was serious she went to get the manager to come over to talk to me. He never spoke to me at all, he just kinda walked by and took a look at me and the girl came back and told me the position had been filled. LIAR. Damn these good looks of mine must have been too intimidating….
So while Kris, Laurene and Serene bust their asses working, I spend my days drinking mango shakes and keepin it real.

The Flooded Forest of Kompong Phhluk is by far one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. It was a 45 minute tuk tuk ride from Siem Reap, another 45 minute boat ride before we made it to a little fishing village, and from there we had to swap to a paddle boat in order to navigate the dense flooded forest. After we left the flooded forest, we got back onto the bigger boat which took us out to a lake where we saw the raddest sunset ever. Once again, the video cannot do the the flooded forest justice, you’ll need to go check it out for yourself!
Well as you all know, I hit up Cambodia a couple of weeks ago. If you ever get the chance I HIGHLY recommend that you head to Siem Reap to check out the Temples of Angkor. The temples are by far one of the most magnificent things I have ever seen and this video cannot do it justice.
Ben is gone….
He was supposed to leave last Friday but due to a fuck up with his flight booking he ended up staying an extra 5 days. I have a heavy feeling in my heart. I knew all along that he would be leaving so it’s not like it was a surprise I didn’t see coming, but it doesn’t make the situation any easier. The last 4 weeks have been amazing, I couldn’t have asked for anything more.
The four of us are on this amazing adventure around the world but at the same time it’s super shitty. We’ve met some amazing people and as soon as we become close it’s time to say goodbye again. Even if Ben didn’t leave today, I would be leaving eventually anyways. I’ve said bye to my friends at home but I know I’ll be going back there one day and they’ll still be there. When you meet people traveling it’s difficult to say if you’ll ever see each other again. The goodbye is always sad because you always say yeah we’ll meet up in some part of the world, you can come visit me in (insert country here) or I can come visit you in (insert country here), and I think deep down inside we know it’s a lie.
I hope I’m wrong this time. I hope this isn’t the end.
To my dear Ben, thank you for being so wonderful to me, for taking care of me, for listening to my stupid stories, for appreciating Universal Solider as much as I do, for teaching me about Farmville, for the good times, for the laughs and for the love.

Last week, we heard about a music festival coming to Ho Chi Minh called Loretofest with headliners Ratatat. We pretty much all shit ourselves as Ratatat is a Jet Set Zero favourite. So last night, Kris, Serene and I managed to see them live from the front row AND meet the band after. I can now die happy, I touched 50% of Ratatat.
To Brian and Rob, it’s a crying shame you missed out. :)

Front row! That's Ratatat on stage behind us.

I finally found something that I could not bring myself to eat…..
…roasted tarantulas! I have an irrational fear of spiders (even little ones) so there was no way I could eat a whole one. We saw these at a roadside stop on our way to through Cambodia. I told Ben that if he broke off a leg a fed it to me I would eat it but I couldn’t even bring myself to pick one of these tasty(?) morsels up.
Who needs a fancy car seat when you have a high chair and a pig shaped pillow to act as an airbag?

I’ve been listening to Kris talk about the awesomeness of Angkor Wat for the past month and how it is one of the most amazing things she has ever seen. Ben is heading to Cambodia tomorrow and I was immediately jealous, I would love to go but I don’t have a job yet and I should be cautious with my spending. But as Kris reminded me, Jet Set Zero is about taking the first step, stop making excuses and just book your ticket and go. So it’s done. I’ve made another one of those impulsive decisions and threw down $16 for my bus ticket to Siem Reap.
Life is good.
See you in a week.
