I love going to karaoke at home, but karaoke here is a whole different animal. The Vietnamese love their music here and karaoke is a huge part of their culture. Each group gets their own private room, and the music is ear-bleedingly loud. But what fun it is! We sang for almost four hours and it cost us around $20 (divided by 6). In true Asian style, the words to the songs were often wrong (Neil Young singing 4 “days” in Ohio?). I was able to get a few shots of the action before my battery died for your viewing pleasure. Unfortunately, my epic rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” did not make the cut but stayed tuned for it in an upcoming episode – one of my better performances if I do say so myself. I’m sure we’ll be back!
eeeeyouch. I mean, GREEEAAAT!!
Karaoke in Asia far outstrips the “American Idol” /talent show setup of Western Karaoke for those of us who dont intend to impress a crowd with our vocal talents. In Japan Karaoke is a national pass time basically, and its great fun to drink yourself into a Rod Stewart inspired version of “Do ya think im Sexy” with all your friends watching you dance/sing on the table (not that I know from experience). The only problem is that the Japanese do it so much that they are all actually quite good singers.
Have to say though, your Karaoke room looks pretty shiny and new. Every one I have been to in Japan is generally a mini-version of a club, with their own distinct smells, stains, etc. Great selection of tunes by the way. My heart skipped a jump when I caught Fleetwood Mac! Nice!
