Mrs Thy, a co-worker of mine, takes us to her pagoda where a buddhist crowd is celebrating the dead. The three day long ceremony happens only once a year. We showed up at 7.00 AM on a Sunday, to be there right from the start on the first day of the celebration.

Mrs Thy, thank you so much for helping us understand what is going on in front of us!

    Laurene,
Thanks for this really cool video. Very fascinating to watch. I am really impressed that you were allowed to film so much of the actual ceremony as it was happening. Its really cool to see this as well, because here in Japan there are also many festivals and ceremonies to pay homage to the deceased at temples and shrines, obviously a result of Buddhisms influence. Question though. You used the term “bible”, which I assume doesnt mean the Christian one. What book are you reffering to?

    Hi Jesse,
I had no problem filming the ceremony. I had actually asked my friend a few days before, to make sure that it would be okay to film it.
You are right: the buddhist bible has nothing to do with the Christian one. My friend uses the word ”bible” to refer to Buddha’s teachings which are put together into several books. She said the word ”bible” also refers to texts written by Buddhist masters about 2000 years ago.

Thanks a bunch Laurene. Nice to get your feedback on that. I have been rather interested in Buddhism myself but dont know anyone who practices it and it seems a little hard to discover a starting point for it. Thanks for the link! Cheers!
