Give Hongdae a second chance, it's a great spot with a lot of excellent bars and restaurants and totally worth checking out again.

I'll second your vote on Itaewon- it's dreadful with the exception of a few restaurants (and an import market where I buy my curry and coconut milk).

Hongdae it is one of these weekends when you aren't off gallivanting around other parts. I'd also recommend the Yellow sea islands of Deokjeokdo or Sunyudo (or Ulleungdo in the East Sea). Damn good places and cheap too.

Cheers~

Hi Josh-

I think I'm getting a little deeper into where to go and where not to go in the city, and maybe I should replace Hongdae with "Itaewon" at this point. I'd definitely be willing to try a few of the better spots in Hongdae.

Tinpan is hell and an ongoing joke among any expat whose been in Seoul more than a few years....but Hongdae is a BIG area with many good hidden places.

Rob knows me- if you want to give it another go I'm happy to show you the more interesting side.

Cheers!

Sir, that is one of the best things I've ever read. I was in Seoul last year and totally avoided Itaewon expecting it to be full of complete morons. I recently moved to Beijing and have hung out in the San Li ter area and discovered my suspicions are correct. These areas are full of complete losers that would likely have no friends, let alone a job in their home countries. These areas showcase the absolute worst of western culture and I feel rather ashamed to be one when I'm anywhere near them.
And you can tell which guys are the weakest cause they usually have a strange looking forhead and tell you things about the female anatomy that A; you already learned when you were 14, and B; you never ask them to tell you about in the first place. It's just creepy as hell.
