Italian Food Porn by Courtney on September 2, 2010

Episode One of Jet Set Zero Italy captured just a small piece of the massive chow-downs we experienced nearly every day. Check out this video for some of my favorite food moments from this summer’s adventure! It was so nom-worthy that I’m bringing all my recipes from the road home for a new cooking show, Really Easy Italian.  Good luck and hearty appetites to the Thailand cast.  Enjoy!

So I’m in Thailand now. Yay, right? Well, it would be better if I didn’t have to deal with getting disconnected over and over again trying to figure out how the hell to get my money from my credit card company. Turns out this card I got does indeed work abroad. Everywhere, in fact. Apparently when they meant “everywhere” they were really trying to say “everywhere but Thailand”! Fuckers. So now I’m stuck on my first day in Thailand trying to figure out how to get un-fucked by this credit agency. I took every precaution for this shit not to happen and yet here I am.

See. Money is satan.

SHEDDING SOME SKIN… by Evita on September 1, 2010

The double meaning is no coincidence…
In arriving in Bangkok, specifically our street in the Sukumvit (I think…) section, at 1am, the nightlife was definitely alive and well. The prostitutes, of the third gender prevalent in Thailand, adorned the streets. For undisclosed prices known to me, they shed clothes, exposing skin to make a living in this country.

I, on the other hand, am shedding this skin in a more emotional, non-literal, and financial level. Waking up this morning at 6am, I wasn’t able to sleep and decided to be productive. I love congregating in hostel lounges. It’s where the conversations with strangers, networking, and insight shows itself with people you didn’t even know existed. It’s the beautiful cesspool that reminds me why I travel. This morning was no different. The Universe placed the perfect person into my life this morning…more on Mary later.

Financially, this morning led to the uneasy awareness of nearly a $300 discrepancy in my fund budget. I am still baffled at how it happened. Yet, between having to pay a staggering $142 for added visa pages, and an extra $150 for a RT flight, my funds were thrown off course worse than expected.

I am already in survival mode and it’s day one in Bangkok. Work is more of a necessity, and considering money for food may be greatly curbed, I’ll be shedding more skin in the form of disappearing weight.

What Have I Gotten Myself Into? by Jeremiah on September 1, 2010

Stranded in Hong Kong International Airport

After thirteen hours on a plane from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, we eventually ended up in the Hong Kong airport. Thanks to the delayed flight, we ended up missing our connecting flight to Bangkok, so we have been stranded in the Hong Kong airport for about 15 hours now. Needless to say, I want to break down and cry right now. Never in my life have I ever had to stay overnight in an airport. These airport chairs are quickly becoming my best friend! I’m pretty sure Tyler is about tired of hearing me vent. I guess this is all a part of the Jet Set Zero experience!

Table for one please… by JeanPierre on August 31, 2010

I rolled into Bangkok last night tired but amped because our new adventure had finally begun. In the past 24 hours I had been in 3 countries, on 2 planes, 2 buses, and hauled 27 kilos of luggage along the way. Eventually I came to the realization that I hadn’t planned much farther beyond simply getting to Thailand. The rest of the crew doesn’t get here until tomorrow, so what the hell am I supposed to be doing? The moment passed and I quickly regained my sense of purpose. Let’s just relax for the night, have a quiet meal, and start searching for essential items tomorrow.

The area of town surrounding our hostel is like a post-apocalyptic tourist trap from a sci-fi flick. Aggressive street vendors line the sidewalks with covered carts, packs of motorcycle taxi driver’s beckon as you walk past, in the distance groups of hot girls linger at the near by bus stop. Oops…..I’m sorry….Quick! Avert your eyes…. Those are lady boys, and no, I DON’T know what you’re talking about..I wasn’t looking at you sweetheart, I was looking at that sweet old lady behind you. Smile at the old lady. She has something in her hand. GOD DAMNIT! It’s an advertisement for thai hookers. Good one granny! I’ll just keep walking…

Just like how I know that Times Square isn’t really the heart of New York, I know that this isn’t what Thailand’s about. I do appreciate it for what it is though, a jumping off point, some place to regroup and collect ourselves before the inevitable journey into Thailand’s true heart begins.

Going away party, part II

1) If he thinks a girl is pretty, it will be one of the first things he says to her.
2) He’s a strong believer in faith – and has the word tattooed on his arm. Twice.
3) He’s totally easy going. (Major plus!)
4) He uses a southern drawl to call my Mom “Ma’am” in such a way that she doesn’t get offended.
5) He can be trusted to take great group photos.
